Hepatic function test details

A hepatic function test is a simple blood test that helps provide insights into how well your liver is working. Your liver has a variety of jobs, including filtering toxins, metabolizing drugs, regulating blood sugar, producing bile for digestion, and synthesizing essential blood proteins and cholesterol. This test looks at several markers in your blood, including liver enzymes, waste products, and proteins. For example:

  • Liver enzymes may rise when your liver is stressed, inflamed, or injured.
  • Higher levels of bilirubin, a waste product the liver helps process, may indicate your liver is having trouble processing it.
  • Lower levels of albumin, a protein made by your liver, may suggest your liver is not working well enough or that nutrition or other health issues may be involved.

Results may help your healthcare provider further evaluate signs of liver stress, irritation, damage, or disease.
